Dr. Michael R. Mantell earned his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania after completing a M.S. degree in clinical psychology at the Hahnemann Medical College. He was the senior Post-Doctoral Fellow in Clinical Psychology at the Devereux Foundation and served as the Chief Psychologist at Children's Hospital and Health Center of San Diego for four years, until 1980. He then created a comprehensive program of psychological services for the San Diego Police Department, where he served as Chief Psychologist for ten years until 1990.Dr. Mantell has been a long-time member of the faculty of the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical School, and has taught at the University of Southern California in addition to a number of other colleges and universities. He specializes in the care and treatment of couples struggling with infertility and evaluating donors and surrogates for their emotional fitness.
Dr. Mantell has authored many articles on infertility treatment, stress, and child/family mental health issues in professional and lay publications and has appeared before mass audiences in lecture programs nationwide.
As a television commentator on the San Diego CBS affiliate KFMB, he appeared for two years as a segment reporter, twice weekly, which led to his national prominence. His wide range of expertise, coupled with his superior communications and public-relations skills has made him a popular commentator and guest on television and radio talk shows across America. His topics have provided the impetus for more expanded segments on "Oprah," "Nightline," "Larry King," and to his many regular appearances for more than a decade on "Good Morning America," and have captured the fascination of readers of the many publications in which his articles have appeared.
