Dr. Hanafin is a licensed clinical psychologist and a pioneer in the psychological aspect of surrogate parenting. Clinical works include counseling infertile couples, surrogate mothers, egg donors and birth mothers. Dr. Hanafin is a consulting psychologist for the Center for Surrogate Parenting, Inc. She and her associates are responsible for the psychological screening, testing, and interviews conducted on the women who apply to the program. They lead the mandatory surrogate mother/egg donor support group meetings and counsel the surrogates and donors throughout their participation. Dr. Hanafin makes the decision regarding the "matching" of surrogates and couples, physicians, attorneys and administrators. Currently the psychological team is working with over 90 surrogate mothers and have counseled close to 300 other women who have completed the program. She also counsels traditional adoptions and egg donors.
Dr. Hanafin is a member of the American Psychological Association, the California State Psychological Association, and the American Society For Reproductive Medicine. Dr. Hanafin lectures across the country regarding the psychological aspects of surrogate parenting and third-party reproduction. Dr. Hanafin's research includes "The Surrogate Mother: An Exploratory Study", "Surrogate Mothers: Reassessing Human Bonding" (1987 American Psychological Association Convention) and "Egg Donation: Survey of Post-Retrieval Attitudes" (ASRM, 1995). She continues to collect testing and interview data on women who participate in third party reproduction.
