Dear TASC;
I have just received a disturbing response from Assemblyman Guy R. Gregg. He is the Assistant Majority Whip on the NJ Insurance Committee that will be discussing and deciding on the Family Building Act in New Jersey. I will be writing of my concerns to him shortly. But I thought it might be a good idea to share his letter and views about the Family Building Act with the voters in New Jersey, since he is up for re-election in November.
Sincerely,
Leanne

Thank you for contacting my office suggesting that New Jersey Mandate Insurance Companies to provide infertility coverage. I appreciate your comments.
I certainly empathize with your situation. Infertility is frustrating to people who would like to raise a family of their own, and I wish you well. However, I am philosophically opposed to mandating insurance companies, or any company, to provide services. Such a policy only increases the cost of insurance, often hurting people who would never use that coverage. For example, requiring an insurance company to include in the policy of a sixty year old man maternity coverage seems unreasonable and a poor use of money. It would, I think, make more sense to tell that man that instead of maternity coverage, he has the option of purchasing insurance for prostate surgery. By doing this, people pay for coverage they choose and want. In a sense, the people determine their own coverage. In the same way, giving people the opportunity to purchase infertility coverage makes more sense than requiring those people who have children to have infertility coverage.
For too long, the state has tried to solve problems by imposing mandates. Such a policy has increased health insurance costs, making it unaffordable for many. Such solutions, while well intentioned, are poor public policy since they often do more harm than good. Allowing consumers to have more control over their coverage will do more good in the long term than additional state mandates.
If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
Sincerely,
Guy R. Gregg,
Assemblyman, District 24
What about these questions Assemblyman Guy R. Gregg ?1- Where is the health insurance structure he is writing about ? As far I know this idea of health insurance coverage does not exist in the whole nation. Does Gregg intend to restructure the whole insurance industry?
2- Guess what! The 60 year old man he gives as an example IS paying for coverage of maternity as we all are. Even those with infertility problems pay for maternity care. And we are also paying for Well baby care. And we all are paying for the heart attack the 60 year old man, or for that matter an Assemblyman may or may not have. The question is therefore raised why should I have to pay for anyone's illness if I do not have that illness? The answer- BECAUSE WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY!!
3- Currently the health insurance companies are structured like a pool we all pay into. Who has a crystal ball to predict which insurance we should purchase because we may get that illness, as Gregg refers to with his example of the 60 year old man and prostrate coverage.
4- Did he even read the petition? The study in Massachusetts states that infertility coverage only costs an additional $1.76 per month per person. Mass. has had mandatory coverage for about 10 years already. NJ is in the dark ages when it comes to infertility coverage.
I am glad Gregg had the nerve to reply to me during an election. This way I will know that I will not be voting for him. Do you want this kind of Assemblyman on your Insurance Committee deciding on the Family Building Act in New Jersey?
Sincerely,
Leanne
