Steven C. Litz graduated with distinction from the University of Virginia in 1981, with a degree in English and Philosophy. He then went to Indiana University Law School and graduated in 1984. In addition to his surrogacy practice, he specializes in criminal defense work. He has lectured across the country on surrogacy and receives hundreds of referrals from physicians and other professionals seeking assistance in this area.
He began his involvement in surrogacy as a result of having cancer in 1977, learning that his own fertility was in question, and going through over a year of attempting to conceive. He and his wife are now the parents of twins.
His program, Surrogate Mothers, Inc., has been assisting couples and individuals in creating families since 1984. SMI has had 80 babies born to date, another 45 couples from around the world who are expecting, and a number of surrogates who are available for matching. "Ours is one of the most respected programs in the country," says Litz, "We have never had a woman change her mind."
